As Seaweed in the 2007 film production of Hairspray and Danjou in Take the Lead, Elijah Kelley sang and danced his way into our hearts and to the top of our casting list for Sammy Davis, Jr. The 30-year-old triple threat would sound fantastic singing a rendition of "Mr. Bojangles." He's not an eyesore in a suit, either.
We were hard-pressed to find an actor who could play Frank Sinatra. Ol' Blue Eyes is not easy to replicate; Martin Scorsese tried for years to get Leonardo DiCaprio to sign onto the part, but the project fell through. It would be impossible to depict Sammy Davis Jr.'s life without the leader of the Rat Pack, however, and we think Ryan Molloy is the best option. This blue-eyed Brit played Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys during its West End run, and we're positive he can go from London to "New York, New York."
Tony Award winner John Lloyd Young gets our vote to play Dean Martin in this biopic. Another former Jersey Boy (this time Broadway), Young could certainly sing a song or two in Dean Martin's booming baritone and is already used to performing in a suit. If President Obama thinks he's good enough to be a member of the Committee on the Arts and Humanities, he has our vote, too.
There wouldn't be a Sammy Davis, Jr. without a Sammy Davis, Sr., and the singer's performer father played a big part in his obsession with entertainment. We think The Cider House Rule's Delroy Lindo would make a great Mr. Davis, Sr. While 41 years on film does not a dancer make, this actor's extensive experience on-stage and 10-year partnership with the Berkeley Repertory Theatre must have brought him to at least one dance studio. It helps that he's a dead ringer for the elder Davis, too.
Altovise Davis, the third of Sammy's wives and the most beloved by his fans, would be a great role for Deception star Meagan Good. Good's varied filmography—which includes comedy Anchorman 2, horror movie Saw V, and drama series Californication—could give Altovise a lot more dimension and complexity than the public got to see during her time.
Since this biopic will tackle the racism Sammy Davis, Jr. experienced as a black man in 20th-century America, it is likely that Kim Novak will make an appearance. Davis's purported relationship with Novak was the scandal that spilled across every gossip column in the country because of how people felt about interracial dating at the time. The Vampire Diaries' Candice King would excel in the role of Kim Novak; besides the fact that her doll-like features mimic those of the movie star, King's experience on critically-acclaimed dramas like Juno could give her performance a boost.
