The Queen of the Jungle must be equal parts graceful and strong, elegant and resilient. Zoë Kravitz has plenty of acting experience, with roles in successful films like Dope and Mad Max: Fury Road. We think Kravitz's effortless and mysterious beauty, and experience singing in electropop band LOLAWOLF, would make her a perfect Nala.
The time we share with Simba's father, Mufasa, in The Lion King is devastatingly short-lived, but the character is essential in guiding Simba's journey in the film. Mufasa's wise, experienced voice of reason would best be played by Idris Elba. The actor even has Disney reboot experience under his belt; he plays the frightening tiger Shere Khan in this year's Jungle Book.
Of all of the Disney animated movie villains, Scar must be one of the scariest. Apart from his deviousness and menacing physical demeanor, the most signature characteristic of Scar is his low, curdling rasp of a voice. Will Arnett has used his voice acting skills in countless animated films, most recently in The LEGO Movie. His voice surely has the perfect rasp to capture Scar's essence.
Timon's wisecracking nature, excitement, and huge heart are what make him everyone's favorite meerkat. Whoever plays Timon in the Lion King reboot needs to make audiences laugh without being afraid to make a fool out of himself, and comedian Kevin Hart could do just that. Who should play Timon's friendly warthog best friend, Pumbaa, is still up for debate.
The Lion King reboot is expected to feature some of the film's original songs, which means the new Simba is going to need some serious singing talent. We'd pick Elijah Kelley, who showed off his velvety voice in The Wiz Live! and Hairspray, and proved himself as an actor in Lee Daniels' The Butler.
As Stranger Things fans eagerly await Season Two of the breakout Netflix series, we'll take every chance we can get to see the show's talented (and adorable) young cast of adventure-seeking kids back on screen. That's why we think Young Simba should be played by Stranger Things' Caleb McLaughlin. He has a sweet but spunky presence, and the ideal resumè for the role—it turns out McLaughlin began his career as Young Simba on the Lion King Broadway stage back in 2012.
