Tinashe Made Us a Playlist for a Nasty Girl Summer

This is SOUND ADVICE, a weekly destination for playlists curated by Interview’s friends, enemies, and lovers. Over the past few weeks, we’ve gathered playlists from Role Model, Holly Humberstone, and DJ Bloodcore. This week’s special guest is the one and only Tinashe, who’s had the summer in a freaky chokehold with her single, “Nasty,” and it’s chic/tweaked/sleek EP of remixes. After recent collabs with the likes of Shygirl and Kaytranada, she’s gearing up to release Quantum Baby, so she made us a playlist full of what she’s been bumping in the meantime—and pondered the eternal question of which pair actually did match each other’s freak.

Where do you dance? Rehearsal, shows, any place that plays really good music.
Who’s the queen of R&B? Janet Jackson.
What song is your guilty pleasure? I don’t really feel guilty about any song so I don’t really relate to that.
Who are your style icons? Rihanna.
Who do you trust most with the aux cord? One of my younger brothers. They have good taste in music.
Sunglasses inside: yes or no? Definitely.
What song on this playlist makes you cry? Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love.”
Who is your dream collaborator, dead or alive? André 3000.
You just arrived at the function. What are you ordering at the bar? Definitely a glass of champagne!
What album is playing in heaven? Probably André 3000’s flute album, New Blue Sun.
Name a song that reminds you of your childhood: “…Baby One More Time”
What’s your national anthem? My national anthem right now is “Nasty.”
Who are two people that actually did match each other’s freak? I’ve been trying to figure this out all summer too.
How do you have a Nasty Girl summer? You just have fun with your friends, be hot, do whatever you want to do, go outside and get some sun, and that’s pretty much it.
What was your first reaction upon seeing the @nates.vibe Nasty Girl dance? I thought his hips were like butta.
Three words to describe Quantum Baby? Dynamic, bass-y, and forward.
Which Sex and the City character do you identify with? I am a Carrie defender so I’m gonna go with Carrie. She’s been getting dragged lately but I feel like she’s a loyal friend, and she’s just a flawed human being.
Favorite Britney music video of all time? Definitely “…Baby One More Time” I’d say.
The world is ending. What are you wearing? Probably something that’s warm and functional because I want to survive! So probably some sweatpants. I’m trying to survive—I’m thinking about how to be tactical.
