The French Musician Lala &ce Is a World Unto Herself

“I come from a very African family, so I didn’t have a name for being attracted to girls,” says the Lisbon-based rapper Lala &ce (pronounced “ace”). “I only found myself when I moved to Paris, especially when it comes to my sexuality. Just before I left my hometown of Lyon, I lost my dad. Leaving was kind of an escape from that sadness, too.”

“Sexuality is the main theme in my music,” says the 26-year-old musician, whose latest album, Everything Tasteful, was released earlier this year. “But in both music and in life, I like to approach sex in a not–too–up-front way. I’m respectful, but if you want me to be disrespectful, I will be.”

“After I cashed my first big check, I bought a vintage Cartier gold watch,” says the singer, who has modeled for Burberry and Ami Paris. “But I’ve seen friends who get checks and spend everything in six months and they’re back to square one. I don’t want that.”

“There was one openly gay girl in my school, who I looked up to but who I also judged,” she says. “Obviously, I was rejecting my own self.”
