“Girls and Cars!”: Electroclash Duo Somewhere Special Make Us a Playlist

This is SOUND ADVICE, a weekly destination for playlists curated by Interview’s friends, enemies, and lovers. Over the past few weeks, we’ve gathered playlists from Rosalía, Amar Ediriwara, and Sophie Thatcher. This week’s playlist comes courtesy of the electroclash duo Somewhere Special. Last year, Bruno Zero and Simone Alysia began making music together for fun. Not long after, they accumulated a cult following of downtown, synth-crazed fans who were ready for more. Somewhere Special’s new single “Secret” dropped last Friday, and before they went “somewhere special” to celebrate, the duo made us a playlist of what they’re listening to, from pluggnb to Justin Bieber, and answered our accompanying questionnaire in which they confessed their musical red flags, mood board inspo, and a couple secrets of their own. Where do you dance?
 Most of the time, I’ll just start dancing anywhere. There doesn’t even need to be music playing.  I think the better question is where do I NOT dance.

Bluetooth or wired headphones? Wired.

What do you listen to before hitting the stage? Some really ignorant trap music hits the spot before I go up there. Lately I’ve been listening to Maxon Margiela. He really gets me going.

What’s on your rider? Cucumber salad.

Who do you trust most with the aux? Easily my friend Esme. Not even a question. 

What song on this playlist makes you cry? “In Church” by M83. When I first heard it, I was flying Spirit.

Is it okay to gatekeep?
If that’s what floats your boat, then sure. I don’t usually do it. Sharing is caring.

Name your favorite artist no one knows about: TEXARKANA.

Where’s the afters? Somewhere special.

What song do you have on repeat? “STEADY” by Skelecta and Emz.

What was on the mood board for the “Secret” video? Girls and cars! MOTORCYCLES!!!!! MORE GIRLS!!!

What’s your favorite album cover of all time? The Gorillaz self-titled album.

The world is ending: what are you wearing? I would wear a full suit of armor.

Probably whatever they’re making up there, right?

What’s a music taste red flag? People who say they like “underground” or “alternative” music. What does that mean?

Where do you dance?
 I like dancing everywhere :>

Fuck, marry, kill: Spotify, Soundcloud, Apple Music? Soundcloud is the best eff, I’d marry Spotify, and Apple Music kill (I’m sry).

Bluetooth or wired headphones? Wired, it’s handy when I drop my phone.

What do you listen to before hitting the stage? Often times Beyoncé with the occasional House of Ladosha.

What’s on your rider? One wireless mic, fog machine, fan, bottle of water, bottle of champagne, mirror, charger, soda, gum, lint roller, cough drops, Advil, and tissue.

Who do you trust most with the aux? Bruno Zero.

What song on this playlist makes you cry? None of them.

Is it okay to gatekeep? Do what you want. In terms of music, the listening experience doesn’t change relative to how many ppl are listening.

Sunrise.

What was on the mood board for the “Secret” video? Lensless glasses, pleasers, Yolandi Visser, motorcycles, sports cars, “Me & U” by Cassie, knee pads… 

What’s your favorite album cover of all time? I’ve liked the Soft Machine Teddybears album cover since I was little.

The world is ending: what are you wearing? Probably a hoodie and sneakers.

 A reggae album for sure—maybe something by Mortimer.
