NYFW
“Spanishly Elegant”: A Front Row Report From Luar SS25
TUESDAY 9:45 PM SEPTEMBER 10, 2024 MIDTOWN
Last night, New York Fashion Week’s most anticipated show took on an American institution. At Luar SS25, “En Boca Quedó,” logo banners replaced the international flags at Rockefeller Center, a symbolic moment for hometown hero Raul Lopez. Here’s what some celebs and collaborators have to say about it all.
———
STEWART UOO: Being where we are, at 50 Rockefeller, which feels like Trump territory, it made me think about extreme religious positioning. There was a witchy esoteric feeling that was special, particularly if somebody within your family has kind of delved into religious extremism. Clothes as armor, community, and the queerness of that. There was a mysticism that seemed foretelling, in the way that science fiction can be foretelling. There was an apocalyptic vibe. I thought it was really special.
PATTI WILSON: I love the religious moments. All the veils.
INTERVIEW: How does it feel being at Rockefeller Center for a fashion show?
WILSON: It was the best place.
INTERVIEW: It feels like New York fashion week is back.
WILSON: I love the calmness of it too.
TINASHE: I love the unapologetic nature of the clothes. They were like, in your face. They were not quiet at all. It was very loud.
INTERVIEW: What’s it saying?
TINASHE: It’s making a statement about being yourself and feeling bold. I love it.
JENNA LYONS: The first thing I need to say is that Madonna walked in at the very end, and that’s all I needed because I’ve never actually been in the same room with her. So that made my night. There are a lot of things I wish I could wear, but I don’t think the bod’s really up to snuff…
K8 HARDY: Yes, it is. I’ve seen it. It’s up to snuff.
LYONS: She has. [Laughs]
INTERVIEW: Any favorite looks?
LYONS: The crazy, gigantic trench coat with like, 17 layers was stunning. I loved it. The opening dress was gorgeous. And what I really loved most was that the models walked. They walked.
HARDY: Have you noticed the return of the stomp?
LYONS: Oh, yeah. It was like a pony clack.
INTERVIEW: Fuck Tyra, we’re walking like ponies.
SHYGIRL: Raul managed to find lots of models who gave the same energy as him. I kept seeing loads of mini Rauls in the looks. I feel like Raul knows how to build a world. All those shapes I hadn’t seen anywhere else. It’s giving future, and it’s also giving now.
INTERVIEW: Which looks do you want?
SHYGIRL: I love a look I can wear on stage, and the two piece legging with all the button detailing, I really want to get in that.
AQUARIA: I’ve been a friend of Raul’s for years and and somehow I’ve never made it to a show, so I’m fucking ecstatic to have finally made it to such a special occasion here at Rockefeller Center. I love the way that he mishmashes streetwear and Catholic imagery and turns it into something that is always so classically Luar.
INTERVIEW: What do you take home first, the shoes or the bags?
AQUARIA: I mean, the bags are Luar staples, so I would snatch a bag, but I would be happy with a little pump.
KUBY LIN: I loved the show. Let it roll.
INTERVIEW: You are the show, bitch.
LIN: It was iconic. I sat behind Madonna and Ice Spice.
AKEEM SMITH: The show was very Spanish.
RICH AYBAR: I thought it was elegant.
SMITH: Spanishly elegant.
AYBAR: Are those two things mutually exclusive?
SMITH: Yes. [Laughs] I liked the look with the black gator thing with the corset top. It was the look after Offset.
INTERVIEW: What’d you think of Offset’s walk?
SMITH: [Laughs] It was Onset.
AYBAR: I loved the embroidery, it was beautiful. Congratulations, sis. I love you.
GOSSIPER 1: When Madonna came out, I thought it was Lil Kim. This is gossipy vibes. but somebody was mentioning how Ice Spice came after Madonna.
GOSSIPER 2: Yes. I think Madonna was pissed.
GOSSIPER 3: Sorry Madonna.
DARA: We just finished the Luar show. What did we think, girls?
AMANDA LEPORE: It was amazing. So good.
JORDAN ROTH: Also, watching Madonna watch all the looks was a good way to watch the show.
DARA: That was pretty fab. Did you have a favorite look?
ROTH: Um, yes. The suit with the open window panes through the whole thing. I’ll be wearing that.
DARA: That was gorg. And you?
LEPORE: The first look. Alex [Consani].
DARA: Alex tore.
