“Commit To It and Do It”: Mel and Lyas Gather the Girls for a Gucci SS25 Debrief

Gucci

FRIDAY 3:31 PM SEPTEMBER 20, 2024 MILAN

This afternoon, Milan was brimming with anticipation for Creative Director Sabato De Sarno’s third ready-to-wear collection for the storied House of Gucci. The result? Well, our very own fashion correspondent Lyas seems to think the young designer has hit his stride. “I think he played with shapes in a way that we haven’t seen before,” Lyas told our Editor-in-Chief Mel Ottenberg. “He took some risks.” Here at Interview, there’s nothing we love more than a risk, so Lyas and Mel had the gall to approach a litany of celebrities on hand for the show—including Mark Ronson, Mariel Hemingway, and Sutton Stracke—to get the thoughts on Gucci’s Sabato era.

MARK RONSON

MEL OTTENBERG: Is brown your favorite color?

MARK RONSON: It is not.

OTTENBERG: Is barf green your favorite color?

RONSON: Yes.

OTTENBERG: Mine too. I think you look hot. Are you DJing the Gucci after-party?

RONSON: No, but if you’re gonna go I’ll go.

Gucci

OTTENBERG: That’s perfect, let’s go. Did you do the soundtrack?

RONSON: I did. Well, it was so fucking last minute but I did a new song with Kelesy Lu yesterday, and then I remixed a classic Italian song that they wanted me to remake. So I was up until five in the morning.

OTTENBERG: Last question: I’ve been listening to Itali-pop all summer, songs like “Boys Boys Boys.” Is there an Itali-pop song you think should be coming back in right now?

RONSON: “Non Voglio Mica La Luna.” It’s kind of amazing. It’s basically the Italian version of “What a Feeling.”

OTTENBERG: I’m ready for it.

RONSON: I’ll text you later.

NARA SMITH

OTTENBERG: How do you look so good right after giving birth? You’re wearing this little tiny—

NARA SMITH: Oh, a tiny romper? Honestly, we’ve just gotta do it. I love playing dress up, it’s like a character you play. You just commit to it and do it.

OTTENBERG: Who’s your next character?

SMITH: Stay tuned. I’ll surprise you.

SUTTON STRACKE

Gucci

OTTENBERG: Hi. I’m here with Sutton Stracke, one of the greatest housewives to ever live. What are you looking for today at the Gucci show?

SUTTON STRACKE: This is my first Gucci show. I’m excited to see the new designer.

OTTENBERG: What makes a perfect confessional outfit?

STRACKE: Oh, golly. I think you have to think from the waist up. Something that will outlive you, so it doesn’t date. But also something dramatic, so that it catches attention…

OTTENBERG: When is the show back on, by the way?

STRACKE: I think… November 15th.

OTTENBERG: Any bombshells?

STRACKE: I’ll just say that it’s a good season. A lot goes on. I’m in trouble, as always.

OTTENBERG: I love it.

MARIEL AND DREE HEMINGWAY

Gucci

OTTENBERG: Hi! Meet Dree Hemingway.

DREE HEMINGWAY: Hi! This is my mom, my sister. What’s up? How are you?

OTTENBERG: I’m really good! It’s good to see you.

MARIEL HEMINGWAY: It’s really good to meet you.

OTTENBERG: I’m Mel Ottenberg, the editor of Interview. I actually just did a screening of Star 80 on Valentine’s Day.

MARIEL HEMINGWAY: Oh, really?

OTTENBERG: Yeah. It was perfect. It sold out.

HEMINGWAY: Amazing.

OTTENBERG: Love you.

AMELIA DIMOLDENBERG

OTTENBERG: I styled Demi Moore in this exact same dress for Interview. I don’t know who wore it better.

AMELIA DIMOLDENBERG: She obviously wore it better.

OTTENBERG: But you’ve got that ass.

DIMOLDENBERG: My ribs are breaking right now.

OTTENBERG: Would you wear neon green?

DIMOLDENBERG: It’s giving Brat. If you styled me in lime green, I’d probably wear lime green.

OTTENBERG: That’s a good answer. What is your favorite color?

DIMOLDENBERG: Maybe white. Is that a terrible answer?

OTTENBERG: It’s a terrible question. I’m going to put you in Interview and style you.

———

OTTENBERG: We’re with Lyas, and he likes the Gucci show.

LYAS: I think it took time for Sabato to find his voice, but he did, and he found a singing voice, because the energy in that room was very dancey and the models were very happy to walk.

OTTENBERG: Do you know who Kirsty Hume is? You would be obsessed with her. In the ‘90s, she was like this six-foot blonde and she was in literally every issue of Vogue when I was 18, 19, 20. She was an amazing Gucci model and her daughter walked in the show today. She was really excited.

LYAS: Oh! And she’s here.

OTTENBERG: She’s here. God, Jessica Chastain is so beautiful. She looks really good.

LYAS: And she brought the drama. Movie stars don’t do that anymore.

OTTENBERG: First and foremost, she’s an incredible actress. Her beauty and how good she looks in that dress isn’t even the whole thing. But I really liked the clothes today. There was a lot of fun stuff in that show.

LYAS: Me too. Did you see the hats and the beautiful skirts? I think he played with shapes in a way that we haven’t seen before. He took some risks.

OTTENBERG: We love risks, but I also just love when clothes look good.

LYAS: There was some beautiful see-through lace.

JULIA GARNER

LYAS: Did you dance at the end of the show?

JULIA GARNER: I did, and I was holding my phone, which I never do. But I just wanted to film everything.

LYAS: It was too good to miss. Is this your first Gucci show?

GARNER: No, but it feels like the first every time.

RAYE

LYAS: What’s your wallpaper?

RAYE: My wallpaper is my dad from when we were in Japan.

LYAS: Because family is important. Is it your first time attending a Gucci show?

RAYE: It is my first time. I can’t believe they invited me. It’s very exciting. Look, there’s Anna Wintour.

LYAS: Oh my god. What do you think of Anna?

RAYE: I think she’s very fabulous, and I would never, ever, ever walk up to her and say hello. Just smile and wave…

LYAS: No, I’m scared.

RAYE: She’s just the queen of fashion, innit?

LYAS: She is. What did Gucci represent for you when you were younger?

RAYE: You know what? Being a Gucci girl, in any way, shape, or form, has always been a dream. I think it was the first designer I ever bought: a pair of Gucci sunglasses. And you know, I’m an old-school girly, so I feel like they always have that element of the 1950s, 1960s.

LYAS: It’s kind of “movie star” as well. Do you go to a lot of fashion shows?

RAYE: Not loads. But when in Milan…

LYAS: Are you going to Paris after this?

RAYE: No, I’m not. I’m going to work. I’m gonna be a musician again.

LYAS: Are you partying tonight?

RAYE: No, sadly. I’m flying somewhere else for work. But I’m enjoying it while I’m here. You look so lovely as well, by the way. So chic.

LYAS: Oh, thank you.

RAYE: Darling, you know what you’re doing.
