Mary Katrantzou’s Atlantis
If the city of Atlantis were lost in Victorian-era Europe, it might look a bit like Mary Katrantzou’s Spring/Summer 2016 collection. And, indeed, Katrantzou cites an engraving by 19th-century French astronomer Camille Flammarion among her inspirations for the collection. The marine hues of navy, plum, bright teal, and the occasional garnet colored vivid fabrics that called to mind the sparkle of light on the ocean’s surface. Frills—like waves or clusters of sea grass—contrasted with the black chokers that each of the models sport around their necks, an inevitably gothic touch.
