SMOKE BREAK
“I’m Pro Soft-Launch”: We Smoked a Joint with TikTok’s Little Sister Ashtin Earle
If followers are like currency, then Alix Earle is Midas: everything she touches turns viral. Her little sister, Ashtin Earle, is no exception. While her big sis Alix ascended to internet queendom, the 21-year-old Tulane student was thrust into the spotlight alongside her, but it’s safe to say her clout is no longer merely adjacent. With 730K followers on TikTok, Earle used the same not-so-secret sauce as her sister to make a name for herself: partying hard, looking good, and not giving a fuck. (So what if she’s hanging out with John Summit?) For this week’s stoned installment of Smoke Break, we enlisted Earle, the new face of Weedie Parker’s “Boobs on Drugs” collection, for a wake and bake session on the beach. As the clock struck 10, we took a toke and talked about hot yoga, soft launches, and the prospect of an Earle family reality show.

EMMA STOUT: Hi. What’s up?
ASHTIN EARLE: Not much. I’m in Montauk right now.
STOUT: Oh, cute. Where are you going out in the Hamptons?
EARLE: I’ve been going to Surf Lodge a lot.
STOUT: Classic. How long are you there?
EARLE: I’m actually driving back to New Jersey today because I have to go to L.A. tomorrow, but I’ve been here for over a week now.
STOUT: Are you a wake and bake kind of person?
EARLE: Not usually, because I will never get anything done if I do.
STOUT: I’m literally the same way. After you roll up a J, what do you do?
EARLE: Well, ideally I’m on the couch and I have food in front of me. I always like to make myself a little snack or something, and I love to be with my friends and watch a show or a movie. If it’s nice out, I’ll sit outside. My friend and I were staring at the stars for an hour the other night, talking. That was fun.
STOUT: What are you making to eat?
EARLE: That’s a tough one because I get creative sometimes with what I eat.
STOUT: I’ll change the question, then. What’s the most heinous thing you’ve made that actually kinda smacked?
EARLE: One time I had Reese’s on tortilla chips. That was gross, but in the moment it was really good.
STOUT: You might be putting me on. What are you watching when you’re fried? Are you a reality TV show girl?
EARLE: Lately, I’ve really been into Love Island USA, but I think everyone has.
STOUT: Yes. How do you feel about Leah and Rob?
EARLE: I think they’re meant to be together, in my opinion.
STOUT: Oh my gosh, you’re so toxic.
EARLE: [Laughs] I know.
STOUT: So you’ve been going out in the Hamptons. What’s your hangover cure the day after Surf Lodge?
EARLE: Honestly, this is really scary that I’ve been doing this. But I usually sign up for a hot yoga class the morning after going out to sweat everything out and get myself up. Because if I let myself rot in bed, I will never get up and I’ll never get out of bed, and I’ll probably feel like shit for the rest of the day. Also, definitely five cups of coffee. I’m addicted to coffee.
STOUT: Where are the afters?
EARLE: Shagwong, which is the one bar that we always end up at after anything we’ve been doing. It’s a little dive bar, but it’s so fun. Or, we’ve honestly been having people come back to our house and swim in the pool until 3 A.M.
STOUT: Do you have a house with friends?
EARLE: My sister rented a house in Montauk for the month, so we’ve all been in and out. Some of my friends have come and left and her friends have come and left.
STOUT: Between you and your sister, who parties harder?
EARLE: That’s a tough question because I feel like we both like to go out and have a good time. Especially this summer, I feel like I’ve been living it up, and she’s been in work mode more than I have, but we both equally like to party a lot.
STOUT: You’re still an undergrad, right?
EARLE: Yeah, I still have an excuse.
STOUT: I have to ask, what’s your favorite John Summit song?
EARLE: Right now, it would probably be “Tears” from his new album, but he has so many good songs.
STOUT: True. Are you for soft-launching a boyfriend?
EARLE: I’m pro soft-launch, I think, if it’s done tastefully. I’ve only had one boyfriend before and I feel like everyone already knew because we were in the same high school. So it wasn’t really something I had to launch…
STOUT: It was already launched for you. It’s kind of a similar situation with the TikTok tabloids, right?
EARLE: Yeah, we’re just hanging out and having fun, but everyone’s posting it and catching us when we’re out, so it’s a weird scenario to be in.
STOUT: Right, I’m sure videos about yourself come up on your TikTok. Is that a bit weird?
EARLE: It’s definitely weird, especially because people from my school or my hometown will send me stuff and I’m like, “What is going on? How do people know everything?” It’s crazy.
STOUT: What’s on your TikTok FYP right now?
EARLE: A lot of food videos, reviews, or Baked by Melissa. Her chopped salads are always there, and Love Island too.
STOUT: Yes, her salads look so fucking good.
EARLE: I always save them thinking I’m going to make it and I never do. But one day, I’ll try.
STOUT: Like the one woman that went viral for… What’s her name? Nara Smith.
EARLE: Oh my god, yeah.
STOUT: Have you tried any of her recipes?
EARLE: Her recipes are insane. She makes everything from scratch. I don’t believe she’s a real human, I think she’s an alien. I swear.
STOUT: If you could follow another influencer’s private account, who would it be?
EARLE: Probably Devon Lee Carlson. I’m just obsessed with her. I think she has the coolest sense of style and the way she lives her life, I love her. She’s my it-girl for sure.
STOUT: Besides Devon, who’s in your coven of it-girls?
EARLE: Right now, Charli XCX is the moment. I’m obsessed with her and everything she does. Addison Rae, she’s cool. I want to hang out with her. I want to know what’s going on in her brain. She’s a vibe.
STOUT: I love Addison. In an interview with our editor-in-chief, he asked her, “How many followers is too many?” And she said, “Jesus only had seven followers.”
EARLE: That’s iconic.
STOUT: I also wanted to ask about something that’s been coming up on my TikTok page, which is this comparison between your family and the Kardashians.
EARLE: I think that’s so funny.
STOUT: Do you think there could be a reality show in your future?
EARLE: I don’t know, that seems kind of scary. There’s cameras on you all the time watching your every move. I feel like that would take away some authenticity in your life just because obviously you have to filter when you’re on camera. And also, being perceived is terrifying.
